Czech-Phillips Tour
PRICE COUNTY

Czechs, Slovaks and Moravians began migrating to the United States in the mid-1800s and to Price County in the early 1900s through the 1920s. With them came their trades or professions, farming expertise, a strong work ethic and a rich culture. Some found the climate and soil as in Europe, suitable for raising crops and farming, while others expanded their professional talents, opening businesses in the small but thriving communities, (45 businesses still operate in the Phillips area today.)

In June, 1942, the Nazi SS completely destroyed the Village of Lidice, Czechoslovakia, shot all males over 16, and sent the women and children to concentration camps. The Czechoslovaks in Phillips erected a monument in memory of those people and their village. Although the entire world reacted to the WWII atrocity, only 2 such memorials exist in the United States.

Following repairs necessary after a 1977 "downburst" weather phenomena, the monument was rededicated in June, 1984. That event brought together the still-strong Czechoslovak faction and an annual festival was conceived.

This festival, held the 3rd Saturday each June depicts Czechoslovak culture at its best, epitomizing color, humor, music and tasty cuisine. In addition to a cultural theme each year, festival-goers from all over the United States find an abundance of arts and crafts, imported gift items, entertainment, demonstrations, polka masses and dancing.
