What To See: The Jewish CommunityThe Golda Meier School, 1555 N. Martin Luther King Drive. Golda Meier (1898-1978) was Prime Minister of Israel from 1969-1974. Her family immigrated from Russia and settled in Milwaukee in 1906. She attended the 4th Street school that is now a National Registered Landmark. Victor Berger Residence, 2576 N. 1st Street. Victor Berger (1860-1929) immigrated from Austria to Milwaukee in 1880. He was the first Socialist elected to Congress, 1912-1913 and 1919-1929. The Wisconsin House (1700-1702), N. 4th St. Originally Mt. Sinai Hospital, the first Jewish Hospital, is a brick building displaying Italianate design. It was also used as a YMCA. Lapham Park Social Center, 1758 N. 9th Street. Named after Wisconsin's eminent historian, geologist and scientist, Increase A. Lapham, this building was in the heart of the neighborhood where they "Became" Americans. The extensive educational, social and athletic programs offered by city government facilitated the acculturation and socialization of the immigrant Jewish families.
