What To See:
German Community

Milwaukee County Historical Society (1913), 910 N. Old World Third Street. Open Mon.-Fri. 9:30 am to 5 pm, Sat. 10 am to 5 pm, Sun. 1 pm to 5 pm.

Old World Third Street Commercial District. The site of famous German restaurants, sausage market and shops.

Pabst Brewery Tours and Gift Shop, 915 W. Juneau. Open year 'round. Tours, June through August, hourly, Monday-Friday 10 am to 3 pm, Saturday 9 am to 11 am; September through May, 10 am, 11 am, 1 pm, 2 pm, 3 pm.

What To See: African-American Community

Wisconsin Black Historical Society Museum, 2620 W. Center Street, (414) 273-7677.

Inner City Arts Council, 642 W. North Avenue, (414) 265-5050.

Calvary Baptist Church, 2959 N. Teutonia Avenue. The modern architectural design reflects a traditional African building appearance.

Harambee House Studio and Gallery, 2358 N. 2nd Street. A private, restored 1880s residence. Call for appointment, (414) 372-4499.

What To See: Polish Southside Tour

St. Josaphat Basilica (1901), 601 W. Lincoln Avenue. Tours offered every Sunday after 10 am mass. (414) 645-5623.

Polish Flats, 4-block area North and South of Lincoln Avenue on 5th Place.

St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church (1872), 5th Street and Mitchell Street.

Tadevsz Kosciuszko Park and Statue, 9th Street and Lincoln Avenue. Halls of History Mausoleum Forest Home Cemetery (1850) 2405 W. Forest Home Avenue. Established in 1850 and designed by Increase Allen Lapham, contains many of Milwaukee's early industrialist and prominent family gravesites, including the Walker family.

What To See: The Jewish Community

The Golda Meier School, 1555 N. Martin Luther King Drive. Golda Meier (1898-1978) was Prime Minister of Israel from 1969-1974. Her family immigrated from Russia and settled in Milwaukee in 1906. She attended the 4th Street school that is now a National Registered Landmark.

Victor Berger Residence, 2576 N. 1st Street. Victor Berger (1860-1929) immigrated from Austria to Milwaukee in 1880. He was the first Socialist elected to Congress, 1912-1913 and 1919-1929.

The Wisconsin House (1700-1702), N. 4th St. Originally Mt. Sinai Hospital, the first Jewish Hospital, is a brick building displaying Italianate design. It was also used as a YMCA.

Lapham Park Social Center, 1758 N. 9th Street. Named after Wisconsin's eminent historian, geologist and scientist, Increase A. Lapham, this building was in the heart of the neighborhood where they "Became" Americans. The extensive educational, social and athletic programs offered by city government facilitated the acculturation and socialization of the immigrant Jewish families.

Baron Museum, the lobby next to Community Hall, Temple Emanu-El B'ne Jeshurun, 2419 E. Kenwood Boulevard.

Turner Hall, 1034 N. 4th Street, National Register. Founded 1853/structure 1882. See the once magnificent ballroom, gas lights, raked stage, gymnasium, Turner/Milwaukee history exhibit, artifacts, pictures and paintings by panormic painters. Civil War Memorial. Tours. (414) 272-1733. Restaurant.
